Game Changing Goal-Setting Tip for Goal Haters
Everybody always talks about goal setting and how amazing it can be…but I don’t know about you - it rarely worked for me.
It’s so easy to fall off the motivation train when there’s always just this stupid elusive goal at the end that seems borderline impossible…
BUT then I learned about this trick that completely changed the way I view and set goals….
And I can’t WAIT to tell you how easy it is!

I used to have a very baseline idea of what goal setting was. I thought that basically, you decide on a thing you’d like to do, and then you try to do it.
If you succeed, TADAA! If you don’t, I guess that’s considered an epic fail?
Little did I know the fundamental secret to goal setting that is the absolute key to its success.
Set ACCOMPLISHABLE goals
A good goal is not just a wish for the future. A good goal is both finish-able and self-controlled.
A finish-able goal means that it’s something that can be truly finished. You should be able to give yourself a completion checkmark when its done. You do it, and it’s done…not just “it’s better than it was before”.
Self-controlled means that you should have total control over the result…not just the action of doing it. If you can do the thing, and YOU can give yourself the completion checkmark, then you’re good to go! If you do it, and then you have to wait for someone else to tell you IF you accomplished it, then the result is not self-controlled.
When my homework is just kinda “studying”, how do I turn this into a good goal?
It’s true - aiming for a specific letter grade on an assignment or test doesn’t fit this description of a good goal. Though you can complete the assignment or test, you can’t exactly control the result.
Instead, aim for completion-based or time-based goals. Something more along the lines of “spend at least 5 hours studying for X this week” or “answer chapter review questions one more time” is much more accomplishable.
Ok, but getting an A IS my goal…what’s wrong with making this my goal???
There’s nothing WRONG with making that your goal - just don’t blame me when you wither away in a hopeless puddle of despair, never to study again if you don’t accomplish it!
Yes, it’s always good to have aspirations, but only set formal goals for things that you can actually accomplish without external approval.
There’s no point in judging your worth based on hopes and dreams and things that are beyond your control.
