The Secret to Getting More Homework Done in Less Time

Have you ever noticed that your classmates always seem to have more time to get everything done?

Do they have a time maker or something? What sort of wizardry do they use?

Perhaps they are just lying or exaggerating to make themselves look better…

Or maybe there’s just a secret you know nothing about….

Or, at least, KNEW nothing about…

…because now you’re about to read:

The SECRET to Getting More Homework Done

Can you relate to this story:

You come home from school, and you have a little bit of easy homework for a couple things, and then a larger project that you really have to at least START tonight.

You are TOTALLY going to be done with time to spare tonight!

You start by pulling out the easiest thing to get started on (so you can just do it and it’ll be done). Halfway through that, you think of a GREAT first sentence for your essay, so you pull out that and write that down. You’re not totally sure if it actually makes sense now that you’re looking at things again, though…so, you read the requirements again, and try to re-work it so it’s better. And - OH - you were totally going to make some flashcards tonight too, so you tell yourself not to forget them as you go back to that initial thing you were working on. Then, you notice that your roommate is watching drag race, and you can TOTALLY probably make the flashcards at the same time! So you move all your stuff to the living room and are ready to rock and roll. The flashcards are done in 10 minutes, though…and you still kind of want to finish watching this…so you pull your essay back out and hope that you might accidentally vomit a few brilliant sentences while you’re watching Snatch Game…

The next thing you know, it’s midnight and you’ve barely even started the first thing that’s due tomorrow.

Sooooooo - want to know a better way to work more efficiently and get more stuff done?

Stop multitasking!

Done one thing at a time is the best way to actually FINISH all of those things!

When you’re a student, your brain is pulled in so many directions, and everything seems like top priority all the time. This becomes even worse when you add on your social life and errand life. How on earth are you supposed to get it all done???

The most efficient way to work on anything is to focus on only one thing at a time, though. So no matter how important anything is on your to-do list, the best thing you can possibly do is to stay on track whenever you start something.

When you pick up an item of homework, either do it until it is completed, or do it for a specific amount of time, and then take a break/switch topics. The last thing you want to do is half start a million things, but never finish any of them.

If you get a distracting thought, don’t let it keep distracting you. Write it down somewhere so that you don’t LOSE it, but then don’t keep wasting a ton of brainpower trying to remember it or make it better. The faster you can get back to what you’re doing, the faster you’ll be able to finish BOTH things!

Want to know the real kicker?

You’re not gonna want to hear this…

TV’s a problem, too…

Yes, it’s tempting to try and watch tv while doing homework sometimes, and there are definitely times where it can technically kind of work. There’s more to homework than getting a passing grade, though…and that’s the real flaw with this kind of multi-tasking. What’s the point of doing all that work if you don’t remember any of it?

There are very few cases when you can split focus and simultaneously watch tv and do homework without massively decreasing your retention and productivity. So basically, in the end, you’ll have to do way more studying…because you won’t have understood the material as well in the first place. Who wants to voluntarily sign up for MORE studying???

Ultimately, you’ll get to watch MORE tv (AND it will be guilt-free!) if you actually finish your homework first.

What’s all this in a nutshell?

Basically, the secret to getting more done is to just do something and let the momentum carry you forward. Every time you get distracted, you lose that momentum and have to rev your engine to get it back.

It’s much easier to just stay on the path and see how far you can go!
